Course Rating Team Members required Behind the scenes right across our golfing country are an unseen group of volunteers who annually appraise the ratings of our golf courses so we as members are afforded the comfort of handicaps with which to use fairly against players from other rated golf courses. Manawatu Wanganui Golf now require a number of volunteers to join the dwindling rating team that services our district. The commitment is generally a full day as you travel to and from courses, spend around 4 hours at the venue conducting the rating process. For those that are interested in joining the team please contact David Townend (MWG EO) on 06 3502961 or email mwgaeo@sportmanawatu.org.nz Pennants Series heats up With one round remaining in the pennant series positions onto the semis and home course advantage have been thrown wide open after a number of surprise results and an overall tight competition.
A Grade sees Levin, Manawatu and Feilding assured of semi final positions but who will eventually get the all important home course advantage is still up in the air. If Levin wins against Palmerston North they are guaranteed the number 1 seed but Palmerston North will not lay down as their position in the final four is not yet guaranteed. A loss to Levin opens the door for Marton (playing Feilding at Feilding) to leapfrog into 4th position. So semi-final teams come down to the results from the Levin v Palmerston North and Marton v Feilding matches. Relegation has heated up with Wanganui's Round 6 victory over Palmerston North. Looking like the likely team to go down they now have a lifeline before their final round match up against Manawatu. Tied on 3 points with Taihape and Tawhero (who play each other in the final round) but ahead on individual games (27.5, 25.5 & 22.5 respectively), a number of mathmatical options exist. Should Wanganui lose to Manawatu they will be relying on a big margin of victory in the other relevant relegation match to ensure they do not get overtaken in the tie breaking individual games. B Grade sees Foxton and Castlecliff guaranteed of semi berths with the last two positions down to the Hawkestone v Feilding B match (If Hawkestone win then they and Buckley join the final four) but should they lose to Feilding B, then Buckley needs to win to guarantee a final four spot with Feilding B, Foxton and Castlecliff. Should Buckley loss in this instance the last position will come down to their individual games tally compared with Hawkestone. > Current Standings An exciting day of golf will surely be had on May 13th!. A Grade plays at Feilding GC and B grade at Rangitkei. Amber Rose looks to defend Lower North Island Matchplay TitleLower North Island Girls Match play
Results from Day 1 - Brydie Hodge top qualified with 74 along with Wellingtons Gabrielle Palado. Amber Rose shot 75 and Keita Durie 78 to round out the top 4. The girls now play two rounds of matchplay tomorrow to decide the 2012 champion. Other district scores - Dana Garrett 95, Mackenzie Coutts 94 and Katherine Paskins 93. For the past two years a hugely successful girls match play event has been played at Marton Golf Club and this week it will host over 20 entrants from the Wairarapa, Taranaki, Wellington and Manawatu Wanganui districts. The event is structured to fill the gap between small junior events and elite women’s events, targeted at players on 5 plus handicaps who are not ready to step up to the National and Charles Tour events played in the same time frame. An 18 hole strokeplay qualifying round is followed by 36 holes of matchplay and last year saw the top two qualifiers Keita Durie and Amber Thompson-Newth play each other for the title with Thompson Newth prevailing 5/4 in the final. Third place was shared by Katie Smart (Wairarapa) and Vanessa Bouvet (Taranaki) after 18 holes could not separate them. The 2012 event should see four or five interprovincial players mixing it with players on handicaps up to 44 which will provide great inspiration for those at the top end of the handicap list. Boys High wins Intercollegiate On a perfect day for golf, blue skies, light winds and perfect course conditions at Marton Golf Club, Palmerston North Boys High upset Tu Toa to win the 2012 Intercollegiate title. They also picked up the boys title (Josh Sedgwick - pictured) and Emma Clayton (PNGHS) won the girls event.
The winning team of Josh Sedgwick, Regan McConaghty, Liam Nesbit and Jack Leenards returned scores of 75, 77, 82 and 84 respectively to beat home Tu Toa by two shots. The team will now progress to the National Secondary Schools Championship at Waipu Golf Club (Northland) in early September. TEAM CHAMPIONSHIP RESULTS
BOYS AND GIRLS GROSS RESULTS BOYS AND GIRLS NET RESULTS PHOTOS District Players at NZ Strokeplay Josh Munn, Tyler Hodge and Trent Munn lead a contingent of 13 district players teeing of tomorrow in the inaugural stand alone New Zealand Strokeplay at the Bridge Pa golf course in Hastings. For the first time the event has been split from the New Zealand Amateur Championship which will now be contested at Mount Maunganui in April (Manawatu Golf Club in 2013).
As the districts number one player over the past two years, Josh Munn has been representing the country in various Australian events recently which has allowed the remaning players to shine in his absence. Brother Trent has had a great start to the season, featuring high in most national events which has seen him rewarded with New Zealand selection to compete in the Australian Junior Amateur in three weeks, alongside Hodge, as part of a four man NZ Team. These three players have all scared the leaderboards so far this year without success and it will surely only be time before they head one on a Sunday afternoon. Joining these players will be fellow team member from the recent NZ Team Strokeplay champion side, Lachie McDonald, who due to normal work commitments has been unable to compete in many of the other events played earlier in the year. He has recorded impressive scores so far this season in his limited play and is one to watch after many succesful NZ Amateur campaigns in the past. Remaining 'fulltime' workers such as Malcolm Wells and Stu Smith along with up and coming school kids Rhys Harold, Kaylin Huwyler, Jack Leenards and the recently returned Tyler Lock will round out the district players. Impressive women's players Emma Clayton and Brydie Hodge will also tee it up against New Zealand's best. Clayton is returning from comprehensive swing changes following a sensational 6 months of golf at the end of 2011. She missed the cut at last weeks North Island Strokeplay by one position after driving to the event overnight following a school camp. Preparation for this event should be back to normal and expectations are for another top 15 position in arguably the best women's amateur field of the year. Hodge has played great golf in the past month to make the cut at both NI and SI Strokeplay Championships and is now consistently shooting in the mid to high 70's. Four more of those will see her inside the top 15 also. With fellow Interprovincial team mates Stephanie McKillop, Keita Durie and Kelly Nicholas missing from the field, it will be their chance to shine infront of both the district and NZ selectors whom will surely be looking at these two for national junior sides in the near future. LINK TO EVENT Junior Tiger - Dramatic finish A sudden death playoff was a fitting finale to the 2012 Junior Tiger played at Feilding GC.

New Bridge to be opened at Pahiatua GCPahiatua Golf Club have been busy in recent months completing a bridge that links the walk between the 3rd green and the 4th tee. On Thursday 22 March it will be officially opened and then followed by an invitation/members event. The new bridge is modelled on the famous Swilcan bridge at the St Andrew’s old course in Scotland.
Munn and Hodge named in NZ Junior Squad Following a great start to the year, Trent Munn has joined current NZ Representative Tyler Hodge in a four man selection squad to compete in the Australian Junior Amateur title.
Congratulations and good luck to both players. The event location is: Bribie Island Golf Club (north of Brisbane) Qld, Australia. The competition dates are: 11th – 13th April 2012 The Junior Boys squad is to be managed by Jay Carter (BOP) The squad is named below (in no particular order): Compton Pikari, Ryan Chisnall, Trent Munn and Tyler Hodge. National Champions!Manawatu / Wanganui No.1 Josh Munn has earned an early 21st birthday present as he lead his side to their first win in the SBS Invitational in Invercargill in 10 years. It was one of the most dramatic conclusions in the tournament’s history as after four rounds nothing separated one time winners Manawatu / Wanganui and defending champions Auckland who had won the title 10 times.
