DEVELOPMENT TEAM CLEAN SWEEPS LOWER REGIONS EVENT
2010_marton_103.jpgThree straight wins over Taranaki, Wairarapa and Wellington gave the Development team a clear victory at Marton Golf Club on April 15-16. Led by Jeffrey Handcock and containing many up and comers such as 13 year old national champion, Rhys Harold, the team surrendered only 8.5 of 30 matches in a display that will set the standard for the full strength teams later in the year.

In a near repeat of the 2009 results, Manawatu Wanganui finished 3rd after two close 4.5-5.5 loses against Waikato and BOP and a win against Hawkes Bay.
The players now move on to Marton to play Wairarapa, Wellington and Taranaki where they finished 2nd in 2009.

JUNIOR TEAM FINISH 3RD TO END THE SEASON
cniq_jack_leenards.jpgJack Leenards, playing at number four, provided a good foundation for the team by winning 2 of 3 matches. Unfortunately the remainder of the side failed to fire, recording losses against Taranaki and BOP with a final round victory over Eastland. The team is now in hiatus until the start of the 2010 Represenative season in August.

With wins in the two biggest events of the year, the junior team will be remembered as one of the best that have ever donned the team colours. Well done to all the members over the season.

FINDLAY HE
ADS JUNIOR TEAM FOR CNIQ
ji_angus_findlay2.jpgManawatu Golf Club's Angus Findlay was named at number one in the Junior Team to play the Central North Island Quad at Taupo GC against Bay of Plenty, Eastland and Taranaki. It has been a huge year for Angus, placing 8th on the open order of merit and 13th on the open stroke averages. A sensational 291 total at the Wanganui Open is just another great result for the year which has seen him finish runnerup at the Nth Island under 15 Champs, record fantastic results in all the Open OOM events, and debut for the representative sides with a great 6 wins out of 7 for the winning Junior Interprovincial Team. Daniel Newlands plays at two, Adam Wallace at three and Jack Leenards has been rewarded for a great debut season by getting the fourth spot ahead of a number of great contenders.

JUNIOR RUN CONTINUES AT SHAND SALVER
shand_salver_champions.jpgThe Junior team won the Shand Salver at Royal Wellington Golf Club, playing against Wellington, Taranaki and Hawkes Bay.
Trent Munn and Kaylin Huwyler led the team home with 3 wins each.

JUNIOR INTERPROVINCIAL SIDE VICTORIOUS
ji_team.jpgThe Manawatu Wanganui team have won the 2009 Junior Interprovincial, the most prestigious junior team event in the country. The previous 9 events were won by heavy weight districts Auckland, Nth Harbour, Waikato and Bay of Plenty but 2009 will be remembered for the dominant play of the Manawatu Wanganui team who played superb golf, beating all but one side on their way to the title.
Over the week the team improved in both confidence and dominance. the first match saw an easy victory over arch rivals Hawkes Bay, but the team was soon put in its place by 2004 champions Bay of Plenty, losing 2-6. The second day on paper was the hardest of the event but the team came out firing, disposing of both Waikato and Nth Harbour to sit at the top of the table after 4 rounds. Easy wins over Eastland and Northland followed, setting up a final round clash against Auckland with the victor winning the 2009 title.
As defending champions, Auckland should have been odds on favourites to go back to back, especiallywith their three under 16 players sitting unbeaten after six rounds. Unfortunately for them, the Manawatu Wanganui players were more than ready with Angus Findlay beating Auckland's top junior Sam An 1up, Kaylin Huwyler halving with Brian Joe and Jack Leenards losing narrowly to Nic Voke. The five under 19 players put the icing on the cake as Tyler Hodge, Trent Munn, Dan Newlands and Adam Wallace all prevailed over their competition to see the team win 5.5-2.5 and create history as the first "small" association to win the Junior Interprovincial trophy.

SHAND CUP AND JUNIOR INTERPROVINCIAL SIDES
Selectors were proud to name an extremely strong side for the Junior Interprovincial to be played September 29-October 2 at Cambridge GC. Even with NZ Junior representative Lachie McDonald unavailable, the side is still full of quality players and should have a great chance of bringing home the title this year.
The team: Josh Munn, Tyler Hodge, Trent Munn, Adam Wallace, Dan Newlands, Kaylin Huwyler-Hunia, Angus Findlay and Jack Leenards.

The Shand Salver team to play at Royal Wellington a week later is: Trent Munn, Angus Findlay, Kaylin Huwyler-Hunia and Adam Wallace. (Josh Munn and Tyler Hodge were named in the senior side)

JUNIORS GO DOWN FIGHTING AGAINST WELLINGTON
The 2009 match against Wellington was a much closer affair than in the past, with the team winning the morning reverse singles 3.5-2.5, only to lose the afternoon match 1.5-4.5 and the therefore the overall match 5-7. The next event on the calendar is a junior only match, the Junior Interprovincial in Cambridge which will see the 5 "senior" juniors available for selection also. Selectors will have a hard time naming a team for this event due to the great form shown by all juniors this year.

JUNIORS DOMINATE REP TEAMS TO PLAY WELLINGTON
kaylin_huwyler.jpgThe naming of our senior and junior representative sides showed how strong our junior programme has become, with 10 of 12 seniors having played junior rep golf in the past 3 years and 5 still eligible to do so. Even though so many juniors were promoted to the senior team, the junior side is still very strong, with all players coming off an academy development season which has them primed for top golf.

The team is headed by Kaylin Huwyler who is ranked higher than many of the senior players in Order of Merit points and stroke averages. At 15 he is not far away from joining the other juniors in a senior rep team. Daniel Newlands was named at 2 and will look to continue his fine form from 2008 which gives him the highest current winning percentage of the team. Jesse Sextus was named at 3, Isaac Durie at 4, Adam Wallace at 5 and Jack Leenards at 6.

DEVELOPMENT REP SIDES FINISH 2ND AND 4TH
Defending champions Wanganui Horowhenus fell short of taking the title again as a solid Wairarapa side went through the three rounds with only one loss. Manawatu fought hard but finished in 4th which was a testment to how well the other teams played on the excellent Marton GC layout.

EMERGING TEAM FINISH A CLOSE 3RD
epq3.jpgThe weather was cold but the scoring was hot at the 2009 Emerging Players Quadrangular in Taupo recently. With strong southerlies whipping across the course creating single figure temperatures it the last thing on all the managers minds was an exciting closely fought battle between the four teams, BOP, Waikato, Hawkes Bay and ourselves.
The first match was against a strong Hawkes Bay team and with one game left it was up to Hamish Melody to play the last hole with the sides tied at 4.5 games each. Hamish hit a great 3 wood into the 230m par 3 which bore through the wind, finishing just long and right of the green. A great pitch and putt was emulated by his opponent and the teams tied the match 5-5.
After losing narrowly the next morning to BOP, the team showed the impressive attitude it is known for by squaring a tough match 5-5 with eventual event winners Waikato.

Player of the event was newly crowned Under 19 Age Group Champion Adam Wallace from Levin (Pictured above) who went unbeaten

CENTRAL NORTH ISLAND QUAD TEAM FINISH 3RD
In similar fashion to the previous event at the Shand Cup, the junior team played solid golf without success. It was pleasing to see this years debutants, Daniel Newlands, Tyler Hodge and Trent Munn have another solid event putting good wins up on the board. The future of Manawatu Wanganui Junior Golf looks bright with a great group of young players fighting for spots in the team.
