What is the Eagles Academy?

The Eagles Golf Academy is dedicated to junior golfers on 5-10 handicaps who have been nominated by local eagles members, club officials and the association Golf Development Manager.
The goals of the academy are to:
Identify future talent and provide a structured pathway into further academy/rep systems, encourage juniors to take responsibility for their own actions, increase the size and quality of junior tournament fields and improve the strength of junior representative sides.
The Academy operates from October to March. The early part is dedicated to coaching, with members attending three clinics run by leading NZ and local professional golfers. The final part of the membership period is dedicated toward playing as junior and senior interclub events commence, rep order of merit tournaments and junior age group events are played. The Emerging and Developing Players Quadrangulars in April will be the goal for most members and they will be the official end of the junior season for 2009/10.

Masterton Junior Open - December 21st
30 juniors headed to Masterton Golf Club to take on the Wairarapas best at the Masterton Junior Open. The Eagles Academy members were joined by the Junior Academy and the Emerging Academy, bringing together our current and soon to be champions. The results spoke for themselves as the juniors won every division they were entered in! The top Eagles member was Ken Metekingi from Pahiatua who cleaned out the nett prize, while Kaylin Huwyler won the tournament with a 75 in a severe cold southerly. Jack Leenards, an eagles member last year took out the under 15 event and Liam Finlayson took out the 11 and under. Amber Rose Thompson Newth prevailed in a playoff against Brydie Hodge in the under 15 girls to cap off a great day for the group.

Clinic Two - Manawatu Golf Club - November 14th
A great clinic was delivered to the Academy by Canadian PGA member Casey Johnson on another typical Manawatu day - wet and windy! The clinic was based on shortgame technique and decision making process with a focus on pitching yardages, standard chipping and bunker shot setups as well as a few fun things thrown in to keep everyone interested.

Clinic One - Levin Golf Club - October 18th

The seven members of the 2009 Eagles Academy were treated to an informative clinic by one of New Zealands leading Golf Coaches, Kevin Smith. As a member of the 5 person High Performance coaching team for NZ Golf, Kevins has proven himself as one of the best in the coaching business. The information delivered to the group will hopefully be absorbed into the teenage heads resulting in top performances throughout the season.
